Help! It’s Our First Thanksgiving In Norway

Ask An Expat

Dear Whitney,
My wife and I are expats living in Norway. We recently moved here and are planning our first Thanksgiving dinner in Norway. Where can we buy lime flavored Jell-o© and cornmeal?

Keep up the great work – love your blog!

Sincerely,
Green and Wobbly

Hei Green and Wobbly,
Jell-O© aka gelatin dessert, or gelé as it is called in Norwegian, is produced by Freia (owned by Kraft Foods under the moniker Mondelez Norge AS). According to the Freia web site, they do not make a lime flavored product and the only “green” flavors are kiwi and pear (part of the Gelé Magi product line). So unfortunately it looks like you may be out of luck. Before you give up hope however, check out the stores in your area which sell imported foods. Some of them may sell imported lime flavored Jell-O© brand gelatin dessert from the US. You can also buy Jell-O brand gelatin dessert online via Amazon.

Cornmeal – ahhh…my favorite! I buy cornmeal at one of the “ethnic” food shops in my area so I’d advise you to go one in your area. Make sure you buy coarse cornmeal as the fine variety is simply too fine for good results in most American recipes. Alternatively, you can use polenta which is found in nicer grocery stores. Again, be sure to buy the coarse ground variety as the fine variety won’t give you decent results for things like cornbread.

P.S. Here are more of my tips on enjoying your first Thanksgiving in Norway.

Hope that helps and keep your questions coming!
