Benito’s Hat Mexican Kitchen Keeps It Real

Opened by a Londoner after stints in cooking schools in Oaxaca, this spot is great for something tasty and healthy during your visit to Covent Garden or Camden Town. While reminiscent of another food spot with a similar concept, Benito’s delivers on freshness, made-to-order and authentic flavors for a reasonable price.

Coming from Arizona and growing up 45 minutes north of the Mexican border, I know one thing to be true-Mexican food authenticity can often be found in one place-the beans. Mexican style beans, whether refried or boiled, are the one place bad flavor and texture can’t be masked. As we say back home, if the beans aren’t right-nothing else is.

Thankfully, Benito’s gets it right here. The refried beans are creamy, savory and not overly salty. The black beans, seasoned with avocado leaves and herbs, are firm and whole-a sign that the beans have been soaked in water prior to cooking and were cooked low and slow (at a lower temperature over a long period of time). Another great thing about Benito’s-they serve real corn tortillas. Not tortillas made of corn flour but real tortillas made with masa harina.

A great location for meat eaters and vegetarians or those on a low carb or low GI diet (ask for a salad instead of tortilla + nix the rice).
