Today’s Highlight: Where can I find fresh or canned tomatillos in Stavanger, Norway?
Tomatillos, are a a common staple ingredient in Mexican cuisine and referred to as tomate verde in the Spanish language. They are commonly used in sauces such as salsa verde.
Canned La Costena tomatillos in the can be found at Middlethons Bunnpris in Tasta-Stavanger (formely an ICA) off and on as well as in some of the ethnic shops the sentrum in Sandnes, Norway. There is a rather large ethnic food shop on Vaagsgate (I think) not far from the Warehouse store which has them as well as. This store in Sandnes also sells several other La Costena brand canned items such as black beans, ‘hot carrots’, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and some salsas. These items can also at times be found in the ethnic store across the hall from the Coop Obs! in Kvdrat and in Kissmet Imports in Stavanger across from Tinghuset. I’ve yet to find Mexican masa harina flour in the stores in Stavanger, but a British company called Cool Chile Company sells masa harina flour online and shipping prices to Norway are not extreme.
Cool Chile company web site is http://www.coolchile.co.uk/. If you are ever in London, their products can be found in most Whole Foods Stores, with the largest selection at the Kensington location. The Cool Chile Company usually also has a stand in Borough market where they sell most of their spices, masa harina flour and tortilla presses.
